So, rumor has it that the SlingPlayer is gonna come out tonight some time. So far, the rumor mill has given us this. SlingPlayer is coming out tonight some time. the price is going to be $29.99, and it will only stream video over WiFi.
My Opinion: Okay, lets take a step back for a second. You can get SlingPlayer on your PC, right? And your PC, unless older than most, has WiFi connectivity, right? Your computer could do the exact same thing, on a bigger screen. This app would be an amazing breakthrough in mobile TV for the masses, if it would be allowed streaming over 3G. AT&T had an app bandwidth rule put in to stop apps like this from clogging up it’s 3G network. This is all in good intentions, they don’t want one person sitting around watching TV on his iPhone while the rest of the world who are trying to do other stuff like surf the web get crappy connection. Now, what I don’t understand is why they stop the iPhone from running said apps, while the same app was released for the Bold, and AT&T didn’t budge. If you’re gonna cut off one privilege to certain users, don’t leave it open to others. When all is said and done, the hackers are gonna come up with a way of letting SlingPlayer run on 3G, and then AT&T will have no choice but to upgrade the network so that everyone has enough bandwidth for whatever they’re doing.
